When you read and understand a poem, 

comprehending its rich and formal meanings, 

then you master chaos a little.

As the ego cogito, 

subjectivity is the consciousness 

that represents something, 

relates this representation back to itself, 

and so gathers with itself.

We are drowning in information, 

while starving for wisdom.

The important thing is to know how to take all things quietly.

Human history becomes more and more 

a race between education and catastrophe.

He that overvalues himself 

will undervalue others, 

and he that undervalues others 

will oppress them.

In short, not only are things not what they seem, 

they are not even what they are called!

A wise man thinks it more advantageous 

not to join the battle 

than to win.

One may believe in an idea absolutely, 

but not in a man.

All the world is birthday cake, 

so take a piece, 

but not too much.

We soon believe the things we would believe.

We keep passing unseen through little moments of other people's lives.

Ideas are one thing and what happens is another.

Today and always, 

there will be an obligation 

to pass on to the new generation 

the tradition of liberal scholarship 

– scientific or in the humanities – 

and to bring the understanding 

of things and human actions 

to everyone.

If intelligence is the triumph of life, 

the spoken word is the marvellous means by which 

this intelligence is manifested.
