When the intellect tries to explicate an image, 

one can never exhaust its meaning, 

one can never exhaust its possibility. 

Images don't essentially mean anything: 

they just are, 

just as you are. 

They talk to some kernel in you that is.

Life is like arriving late for a movie, 

having to figure out what was going on 

without bothering everybody with a lot of questions, 

and then being unexpectedly called away 

before you find out how it ends.

This is the threat to our lives. 

We all face it. 

We all operate in our society in relation to a system. 

Now is the system going to eat you up and relieve you of your humanity 

or are you going to be able to use the system to human purposes? ... 

If the person doesn't listen to the demands of his own spiritual and heart life 

and insists on a certain program, 

you're going to have a schizophrenic crack-up. 

The person has put himself off centre. 

He has aligned himself with a programmatic life 

and it's not the one the body's interested in at all. 

And the world's full of people who have stopped listening to themselves.

If myth is translated into literal fact, 

then myth is a lie. 

But if you read it as a reflection of the world inside you, 

then it's true.

It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, 

clothed with many plants of many kinds, 

with birds singing on the bushes, 

with various insects flitting about, 

and with worms crawling through the damp earth, 

and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, 

so different from each other, 

and dependent upon each other in so complex a manner, 

have all been produced by laws acting around us.

Metaphysics is a dark ocean without shores or lighthouse, 

strewn with many a philosophic wreck.

Theory guides. 

Experiment decides.

Chance favours the prepared mind.

Science is not formal logic —

it needs the free play of the mind 

in as great a degree as any other creative art.

Myth makes a connection
between our waking consciousness
and the mystery of the universe. 

It gives us a map or picture of the universe 

and allows us to see ourselves
in relationship to nature…

I remember where I came from

When you are in accord with nature, 

nature will yield its bounty.

In choosing your god, 

you choose your way of looking at the universe.

I think the idea of life after death is a bad idea. 

It distracts you from appreciating the uniqueness of the here and now, 

the moment you are living.

I do not know what I may appear to the world; 

but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, 

and diverting myself in now and then finding of a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary,
whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

Why are things as they are and not otherwise?
