Like everything metaphysical 

the harmony between thought and reality 

is to be found in the grammar of the language.

Not ignorance, 

but ignorance of ignorance, 

is the death of knowledge.

Hide our ignorance as we will, 

an evening of wine soon reveals it.

In order for the light to shine so brightly, 

the darkness must be present.

Reasoning draws a conclusion, 

but does not make the conclusion certain, 

unless the mind discovers it by the path of experience.

Let us hold our discussion together in our own persons, 

making trial of the truth and of ourselves.

Men create the gods in their own image.

There is no sin but ignorance.

Life is one long struggle in the dark.

The conventional view 

serves to protect us 

from the painful job 

of thinking.

To be wholly devoted 

to some intellectual exercise 

is to have succeeded in life.

Friends are as companions on a journey, 

who ought to aid each other 

to persevere in the road to a happier life.

It is necessary to keep one's compass in one's eyes 

and not in the hand, 

for the hands execute, 

but the eye judges.

A friend is one soul abiding in two bodies.

Thought is only a flash between two long nights, 

but this flash is everything.
